Does Tea Count as Water Intake?

Quick answer: Yes — tea counts toward your daily water intake. Tea is over 99% water, and hydration research gives caffeinated tea a Beverage Hydration Index of about 0.85–0.95 versus 1.0 for water. Herbal (caffeine-free) teas hydrate essentially like water. A 250 ml mug of black tea contributes roughly 212–237 ml of effective hydration.

Tea is (almost) water — with an asterisk

A brewed cup of tea is more than 99% water, and the British Dietetic Association and NHS both count tea toward daily fluid targets. The asterisk is caffeine: black tea carries ~40–50 mg per cup and green tea ~25–35 mg, enough for a mild diuretic effect in people who aren't habituated.

In the Beverage Hydration Index study (Maughan et al., 2016, American Journal of Clinical Nutrition), hot tea's fluid retention was statistically similar to still water, sitting in the ~0.85–0.95 range once caffeine's mild effect is accounted for. In practice:

Tea typeCaffeine (250 ml)Hydration value
Herbal / rooibos / fruit infusions0 mg≈ 1.0 — same as water
Green tea~25–35 mg≈ 0.9–0.95
Black tea~40–50 mg≈ 0.85–0.95
Matcha~60–70 mg≈ 0.85–0.9

Is tea better than coffee for hydration?

Slightly, on average — most teas contain half the caffeine of coffee or less, so the diuretic effect is smaller. Both count toward your goal; both are less efficient than plain water or electrolyte drinks. (Full coffee breakdown: does coffee count as water intake?)

What about sugar in tea?

Sweetened and milk teas add sugar that plain water doesn't. High-sugar drinks concentrate in the gut before absorbing, and the calories add up fast in bubble tea or sweet iced tea. SupaHydrate automatically tracks the sugar in every logged drink alongside caffeine, sodium, and potassium, and warns you as you approach daily limits.

Tracking tea the smart way

In SupaHydrate, tea is a first-class drink type — even on the free plan:

  1. Log a mug in one tap (or from your Apple Watch, a widget, or via Siri).
  2. The app applies tea's Beverage Hydration Index, so your progress ring reflects real hydration, not just volume.
  3. Caffeine from tea is totaled with coffee so your daily caffeine picture is complete.
  4. Your Hydration Efficiency score shows whether your tea habit is helping or whether you need more plain water.

Bottom line

Drink your tea — it genuinely hydrates. Count caffeinated cups at roughly 90% of their volume, herbal cups at full value, and keep an eye on added sugar. Or let the app do all three automatically.
